In 2016 a campuswide centralized backup system was implemented to protect the vital information that faculty and staff store on their workstations. When functioning normally, the backup system runs silently in the background of users’ computers. This page was created to answer basic questions about the backup system. Who’s information will be backed up?
Fulltime Faculty and Staff.
What information will be backed up?
The following files and folders are automatically backed up: Desktop, My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, My Videos, Favorites, Firefox Profile, Chrome Bookmarks, Outlook PSTs, and Outlook Signatures.
Are there any file types that will not be backed up?
Any file ending with the extension .iso (CD/DVD image file) or .vdi (Virtual Computer image file) will not be backed up.
Where is my information stored?
All data is stored on campus in our secure data center.
Is my information safe?
Yes! All backup data remains on the UMHB network and is stored on secure UMHB servers. All data is encrypted during the backup process, and while it is stored on the servers.
When does the backup run?
Your information will be backed up every 8 hours and whenever you logoff of or shut down your computer.
How long will your information be saved?
All daily backups will be retained for 7 days, weekly backups are retained for 3 weeks, and monthly backups are retained for 3 months.
Is there a maximum quota?
Currently there is no limit to the amount of information you can backup. If we see a large surge in data, we may implement limits.
How many devices will be backed up?
Currently only your main computer will be backed up. If you also have a laptop, we can configure it to backed up upon request.
What happens if my computer crashes?
Don’t fret! Contact the Help Desk for assistance. Documents from the most recent backup will be restored to your repaired or replaced computer.
